Jeremy Keenan is a sound artist and composer, releasing music under the name Upside Down Umbrella. His sound is purposefully odd: a sparse mixture of synthesised sounds, ambient scenes and organic instruments.

For Jeremy’s second studio album, Fantastic & Tangible, he commissioned me to create an identity around the Upside Down Umbrella sound. Taking his strange sound as inspiration, the Upside Down Umbrella symbol, UDU logotype and album photography were created.

The final result blends evocative organic photography and sparse geometric symbols. The identity is set in a careful selection of greys and muted natural colours.

Coder T-Shirts

Building a developer community to support a young software platform involves creating great development tools, a viable path to profits and, most importantly, fantastic swag. The Coder T-shirts are fun, personal and useful too.

I Love The Cloud and JavaScript Heart were created in limited edition runs and distributed to coders interested in developing for Blaast, a cloud-based mobile platform. These t-shirts were incredibly effective in raising awareness and building a positive brand image for Blaast amongst their burgeoning developer community.

Vodafone Campaign

Working with various carriers, I’ve created marketing materials for online, mobile and offline campaigns. Alongside Vodafone, I’ve also worked with almost all of Europe’s largest carriers, including TeliaSonera, Orange, T-Mobile and O2.

Part of the fun of contributing to these campaigns is working with some of my favourite properties, including Guitar Hero, Marvel Comics and Star Wars.

Photography

When I’m not designing something wonderful, I’m out snapping the world around me. My photography has been published in several titles and exhibited in various galleries around the world.

Writing

It’s a joy to write and I’ve had the pleasure of writing words for several publications, including The Apple Blog, Flux Magazine and GigaOm.

I’ve covered a variety of topics including art and culture, music, lifestyle and technology. My articles have also been syndicated to websites including CNN, The New York Times and Salon.

Open-source Data Visualisations

Statistics, charts and raw data don’t have to be flat and boring. Visualising data in different ways can draw in an audience and make statistics fun.

GigaOm.com know this and that’s why they asked me to visualise the data from Acquia’s Northbridge Survey on Open-source software. What resulted from this project was a collection of charticles - accessible data visualisations that communicate the facts and tell a compelling story too.

Cosmo Kid

The clever coders over at Pear Comp invited me to join forces and create a game for iPhone. After several months of sketching, coding, designing, testing and tweaking, we released Cosmo Kid.

With Pear Comp focusing their expert skills on coding, I turned my attention to the fun stuff: game design, artwork and music. Immediately after release we received a stream of sterling reviews, alongside being featured by Apple in the App Store.

If you’ve got an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can grab the game right now from Apple’s App Store.

GigaOM Icon Set

This bespoke icon set was designed exclusively for GigaOM. With technology news happening all the time, it was crucial for the site to relay the theme of a massive array of topics to its readers.

The icons are used to clearly and quickly represent specific topics, such as hardware, netbooks, cloud services and geolocation.

Chrome OS

When Google announced their own operating system, at first all we knew was its name: Chrome. There were no images and it would be months before anyone could catch a glimpse.

Om Malik, founder and senior writer at the GigaOM Network, wanted to give his readers a preview of the future. He commissioned me to research and design concept imagery of Chrome.

The artwork included an aesthetic treatment, taking into consideration Google’s brand, their product portfolio and potential user interface features. The images take an informed look at how Google would integrate their existing products - such as YouTube, Google Voice and Android - into the design and functionality of their own OS.

Generative Fun

After creating large scale public sound installations, I decided to start focusing on bringing audio experiences down to a smaller scale. Generative Fun is a sound toy concept for the iPhone that lets you make music while you play a retro block breaker game.

This sound toy blends a traditional game interface with aleatoric and generative music composition processes. Which, stripping away all those long words, means that every time you play, you create an absolutely new piece of music, never before heard by anyone else.
